Cannabis POS in New Jersey

New Jersey cannabis dispensaries need a POS that integrates with Metrc, the state seed-to-sale tracking system selected by the NJ Cannabis Regulatory Commission (NJ-CRC). Since adult-use sales began April 21, 2022, POS in New Jersey has to support dual medical and adult-use transactions in the same store: different taxes, different limits, different reporting. The vendor list is the standard Metrc-state set: Dutchie, Flowhub, Treez, Cova, Blaze, Meadow, Greenline. Pricing runs $500 to $1,500 per location per month, slightly higher than the national average because of New Jersey's concentrated MSO ownership and small licensed-dispensary count.

What New Jersey requires from your POS

The NJ Cannabis Regulatory Commission (NJ-CRC) regulates the entire program: alternative treatment centers (ATCs, the medical-program license type), Class 1 (cultivator), Class 2 (manufacturer), Class 3 (wholesaler), Class 4 (distributor), Class 5 (retailer), and Class 6 (delivery). All Class 5 retailers and ATCs must run Metrc-integrated POS or perform manual re-entry into Metrc within state-mandated timeframes.

Direct Metrc API integration is the standard. The POS pushes each sale to Metrc within minutes, keeping the state ledger in sync with what's on your shelf. Manual entry is allowed but creates daily reconciliation work and is the single biggest source of NJ-CRC audit findings.

Beyond Metrc, New Jersey POS must enforce per-transaction purchase limits (1 ounce flower equivalent for adult-use customers, separate medical patient limits set by the patient's authorization), apply the 6.625% state sales tax and any municipal transfer tax (up to 2%) to adult-use sales, exempt registered medical patients from sales tax, and apply the Social Equity Excise Fee (set quarterly by NJ-CRC) on cultivator-to-retailer transfers.

Vendor landscape in New Jersey

New Jersey's licensed dispensary count is small (under 200 active retail locations as of late 2025) and weighted toward MSOs. The working vendor market clusters around six platforms. Numbers below are list prices from vendor websites; MSO contracts run lower.

Treez has the most visible MSO footprint in New Jersey because of its multi-state consolidation features. Dutchie wins on the integrated menu and e-commerce side, which matters in New Jersey's dense urban retail markets (Newark, Jersey City, Hoboken) where dispensaries compete heavily on online ordering.

Adult-use rollout and POS impact

The November 2020 ballot measure passed by 67% to 33%. NJ-CRC took over a year to write rules, with adult-use sales starting April 21, 2022 at 13 existing ATCs. Most POS vendors added New Jersey adult-use support in Q1 2022 ahead of the launch. Operators on Treez, Dutchie, Flowhub, and Cova had updated builds ready by go-live.

The most disruptive POS work was the Social Equity Excise Fee, set by NJ-CRC quarterly and applied at the cultivator-to-retailer transfer stage. POS systems used at vertically integrated operators had to add a fee line to the cost of goods reconciliation. Stand-alone retailers do not collect the fee directly but see it in their wholesale cost.

Cannabis POS pricing in New Jersey

Three cost lines apply. Subscription: $500 to $1,500 per location per month, with MSO discounts on multi-location contracts. Payment processing: 3% to 5% on PIN debit or cashless ATM (Aeropay, Hypur, Paybotic). Hardware: $1,500 to $3,500 per terminal one-time, or $80 to $150 per month if leased. Implementation: $1,000 to $5,000 covering Metrc setup, menu build, training, and integration testing.

Contract terms in New Jersey skew long because of vendor concentration. 36 month minimums for the discount tier are common. Negotiate carefully: New Jersey's Metrc contract is in place but the state could re-bid, and a forced POS migration mid-contract is expensive.

New Jersey-specific compliance considerations

Three NJ-specific POS features are worth verifying. Municipal opt-out: about 70% of New Jersey municipalities have prohibited or restricted dispensary operations. Your POS needs to handle municipal transfer tax variance (0% to 2%) for stores in opted-in towns, even though it does not manage the licensing geography itself. Delivery support: NJ-CRC allows Class 6 delivery licenses, and POS systems that support delivery (Dutchie, Flowhub, Treez) need driver assignment and chain-of-custody features. Patient privacy: registered medical patient data is protected under NJ-CRC confidentiality rules; the POS should segregate patient records from adult-use marketing lists.

Implementation timeline

Plan 6 to 10 weeks from contract signature to go-live in New Jersey, slightly longer than other states because NJ-CRC requires pre-launch operational inspections. Week 1 to 2: contract, Metrc credentials, hardware order. Week 3 to 5: menu setup, employee accounts, sandbox testing, mock NJ-CRC inspection. Week 6: staff training. Week 7 to 8: soft launch with one terminal. Week 9 to 10: full cutover.
