What Illinois requires from your POS

A third option, batch upload via CSV, is supported by BioTrack but rarely used because it delays inventory truth by hours.

Beyond traceability, Illinois mandates daily purchase limits (30 grams flower, 5 grams concentrate for adult-use residents, half that for out-of-state visitors) and prohibits credit card payments at the dispensary level. Your POS must enforce the limits at checkout and support cash, debit-via-ATM, or one of the cannabis-banking workarounds (PIN debit through processors like Aeropay or Hypur).

Watch the contract length. Several vendors push 24 or 36 month minimums in exchange for a lower monthly rate. If you sign a 36 month contract and later need to switch (because of a vendor outage, BioTrack drift, or an MSO acquisition), early termination fees can exceed $20,000. Month-to-month rates run 15% to 25% higher but preserve flexibility, which matters when the state's seed-to-sale provider could change at the end of its BioTrack contract.

BioTrack vs Metrc: why Illinois is different

Most legal cannabis states use Metrc (built by Franwell): California, Colorado, Michigan, Oregon, Massachusetts, Maryland, and others. Illinois, Washington, North Dakota, and Hawaii use BioTrack instead. That split matters for POS selection in three ways.

Week 6: soft launch with one terminal. Week 7 to 8: full cutover, with the prior system available as a fallback for 30 days.

If you are switching from an existing POS, schedule the cutover during your slowest 14-day window. Avoid cutovers around 4/20, Labor Day, or any state-mandated reporting deadline.
